7 Secrets You Didn’t Know about Author Susan Mallery

My name is Christine Rimmer, and one of my best friends in the world is Susan Mallery. You know Susan as the bestselling author of hits like Daughters of the Bride and Secrets of the Tulip Sisters and her latest book, Sisters Like Us. But I know a whole other side of her. BookClubbish asked me to spill the beans, so here you go…

7 Secrets You Didn’t Know about Susan Mallery

  1. Susan loves all things sparkly. Susan and I are in plot group together, a group of writers who meet every six months or so to help each other brainstorm novels. To reward ourselves for a job well done, we head to one of our favorite fine jewelry stores to ooh and ahh at all the pretties on display. We try on things that we can’t afford and every once in a while, we buy ourselves (or our readers) a little bauble. But mostly, we laugh so much that we worry we’ll be kicked out of the store. Hasn’t happened. Yet…

  1. Susan lives a rugless existence. Her poodle puppy is the cutest dog in the world, but hasn’t quite made the connection that all four paws must be on the puppy pad at the same time before she pees. Ah, the glamorous life of a bestselling author—cleaning up piddle puddles!

  1. Susan refuses to name a favorite writer. Readers ask her all the time to name a favorite writer, but Susan won’t do it because many of her friends are writers, and she doesn’t want to hurt our feelings. To her core, she is a nurturer, always watching out for the people she loves.

  1. Susan’s an only child. She’s so great at capturing the dynamic between sisters, you’d think that she comes from a big family. Susan told me once that her books about families are wish fulfillment. Sisters Like Us is an amazing sister story. Harper and Stacey couldn’t be more different. Harper is a newly divorced stay-at-home mom who’s trying to figure out how to support her daughter when she has no education and few marketable skills. Stacey is a research scientist who has been educated up to her eyeballs, but who’s terrified of becoming a mom. Which is going to happen pretty soon because, oh, by the way, she’s six months pregnant. (And hasn’t told their mother yet!) But even though they’re such different people, Harper and Stacey have this really wonderful sister relationship. They love each other, and it comes through in every word. Great story!

  1. Susan loves shopping on QVC. To be honest, I used to flip past that channel without a thought, but after complimenting Susan on several outfits that she said were from QVC, I had to check them out. She’s one of the smartest people I know—and now I’m pretty much addicted, too.

  1. Susan’s afraid of flying. She’s had to travel a lot over the years for book tours, but she white-knuckles it every time. Once she was on a plane that temporarily lost pressure, and the face masks dropped down. She’s had nightmares ever since—the downside of having a very active imagination.

  1. Susan hears voices in her head. In general, she’s not all woo-woo about writing, but she does hear voices in her head. When she starts a new book, she writes a scene from each character’s perspective until she hears that character’s voice. Then she stops and plots out the whole book before writing the rest. Sisters Like Us has three points of view: Harper’s, Stacey’s, and Harper’s teenage daughter Becca’s. Which means Susan plotted three separate storylines and then wove them together into a really emotional novel that grabs your attention and doesn’t let go.

    1. Reading an ARC of Sisters Like Us now already as amazing as all Susan’s others. Maybe she writes such good sibling stories because, like me, she always dreamed about how things would have been with a brother and or sister
