Cover Love: Stories Based On Real Life Events

While the stories contained within the pages of these covers are fiction, they are based around true stories or inspired by real life in some way. The covers, though all different in style, definitely give the reader an idea of what’s in store for them. Here are five covers we absolutely adore!

Campaign Widows by Aimee Agresti

The cover definitely reflects the story, as we are immediately aware of how political ambitions can upend people’s lives. Left to take care of day to day life while their spouses are on the campaign trail, this unlikely group of friends learns how to support one another and find their own happiness.

Emperor of Shoes by Spencer Wise

Alex is poised to take control of his father’s shoe company, but a visit to China reveals the exploitation and corruption going on behind the scenes. Not only does the cover feature the shoes themselves, but it also reflects the worn-down nature of the lives the workers lead at the manufacturing plant.

Wintering by Kate Moses

A fictional retelling of Sylvia Plath’s last months, the cover of Wintering captures the intensity of her struggles with love, motherhood, depression and grief. The entire book is inspired by the poems in Ariel and focuses on the challenges of maintaining her mental equilibrium.

Jaws by Peter Benchley

Yes, it’s a classic movie, but Jaws had its beginnings on the page…and not just that, but the story was loosely based off of real life shark attacks. While we logically know that sharks are not actually a major threat to humans, you can’t deny how effective the cover is at creating a scary atmosphere.

Burial Rites by Hannah Kent

Charged with murder, Agnes is sent to an isolated farm to await execution. The farmer and his family is at first terrified over her, but over time, they learn that there is another side to the story they’ve been told. Based on the true story of Agnes Magnúsdóttir in 1829, the cover portrays all the fear, loneliness and anxiety of the situation.
